Parallels agreed: “ Since we've got a great Mac product, we should make it look and sound like a Mac product.”, it was therefore renamed ‘Parallels Desktop for Mac’. This name was not well received within the Mac community, where some felt that the name, particularly the term “workstation,” evoked the aesthetics of a Windows product. Its name initially was ' Parallels Workstation for Mac OS X', which was consistent with the company's corresponding Linux and Windows products. Released on June 15, 2006, it was the first software product to bring mainstream virtualization to Macintosh computers utilizing the Apple–Intel architecture (earlier software products ran PC software in an emulated environment). The Alexander of the story is not the king of kings, ruler of Greece and Asia, but the promising but brash 20-year-old son of Philip of Macedon, first proving his mettle in Greece. In his biography of Alexander, Robin Lane Fox sets the encounter in 336, the only time Alexander was in Corinth. According to Cicero, Diogenes answered Alexander with the words, "Now move at least a little out of the sun" According to Valerius Maximus, Diogenes answered: "To this later, for now I just want you not to stand in the sun." The statement by Alexander, "if I were not Alexander the Great, I would like to be Diogenes," also crops up in some other versions of the anecdote. There are many minor variants of what Diogenes is supposed to have replied to Alexander. And when that monarch addressed him with greetings, and asked if he wanted anything, "Yes," said Diogenes, "stand a little out of my sun." It is said that Alexander was so struck by this, and admired so much the haughtiness and grandeur of the man who had nothing but scorn for him, that he said to his followers, who were laughing and jesting about the philosopher as they went away, "But truly, if I were not Alexander, I would be Diogenes." Diogenes raised himself up a little when he saw so many people coming towards him, and fixed his eyes upon Alexander. But since that philosopher took not the slightest notice of Alexander, and continued to enjoy his leisure in the suburb Craneion, Alexander went in person to see him and he found him lying in the sun. Thereupon many statesmen and philosophers came to Alexander with their congratulations, and he expected that Diogenes of Sinope also, who was tarrying in Corinth, would do likewise. According to the version recounted by Diogenes Laërtius, Diogenes replied "Stand out of my light." Plutarch provides a longer version of the story: ![]() Alexander wanted to fulfill a wish for Diogenes and asked him what he desired. Several of the embellished versions of the anecdote do not name either one or both of the protagonists, and some indeed substitute Socrates for Diogenes.Īccording to legend, Alexander the Great came to visit the Greek philosopher Diogenes of Sinope. Versions upon versions of the anecdote exist, with the origins of most appearing to be, either directly or indirectly, in the account of the meeting given by Plutarch, whose actual historicity has also been questioned. Although this coincidence is suspect (it possibly being an invention), the anecdote, and the relationship between the two people, has been the subject of many literary and artistic works over the centuries, from the writings of Diogenes Laërtius to David Pinski's 1930 dramatic reconstruction of the encounter, Aleḳsander un Dyogenes including writings from the Middle Ages, several works of Henry Fielding, and possibly even Shakespeare's King Lear along the way. ![]() ![]() ![]() Plutarch and Diogenes Laërtius report that Alexander and Diogenes died on the same day, in 323 BC. Two areas where this is most evident are the sidebar to the left of the canvas and the export panel. OmniGraffle 7 has made many other little changes to better organize tools and make working in the app easier in general. OmniGraffle keyboard shortcuts are highly customizable. Artboards can also be used as a way to define the objects in a region for later export. The objects within the bounds of your artboard are part of an artboard layer and can be moved as a group by dragging the artboard instead of selecting each object on the canvas that you want to move. With the Artboard tool, you can draw any shape supported by OmniGraffle around objects on your canvas the same way you would draw shapes with the shapes tool. Pro users can also take advantage of artboards in OmniGraffle 7. This is a big deal if you have other apps that have tools that you are more familiar with or prefer for asset creation, but want to bring artwork created with them into OmniGraffle to leverage features that are unique to it. If you have art assets created in other apps like Sketch, Acorn, or any other app that can export SVGs, OmniGraffle can now join your workflow as a destination app instead of just a starting point. The app previously added support for exporting your work as an SVG file, but now, you can also import SVG graphics, which means OmniGraffle can become part of whole new workflows. OmniGraffle 7 plays better with other graphics apps. With a canvas that can expand in all directions, OmniGraffle makes it easy to get started without having to resize the canvas later and shift your work around to fit new canvas boundaries. Projects evolve, which necessarily means space needs change. When I start a new document in any graphics app and am asked to pick a size, it’s often no more than an educated guess at what my needs might be. Kate’s favorite Halloween candy is Black Licorice.” “We love Halloween, and she hates Halloween, so she’s kind of the opposite of us, isn’t she? Since she’s a contrarian and a rebel, I’d have to go with the one candy that no one in their right mind truly enjoys. With Halloween just a week away, Feld reveals what Kate’s favorite treat would be. I know it sounds obvious, but films don’t always check that box for me. I really love scenes that make our hero heroic. “She grabs this barb-wire baseball bat, says a cool one-liner, and pummels the bad guy. “My favorite gag is when Kate decides to fight back,” he adds. The new Halloween flick got pretty close in parts.” I’m talking about a story that is simply brutal and unforgiving. I don’t mean violence for the sake of violence. That said, I would love to do something that really pushes the envelope with gore. It’s closer to Evil Dead 2 than it is to something like Hostel. In fact, Kate walks around covered in blood for the entire second half. “There are multiple deaths and quite a bit of gore. “It’s a different kind of violence, though. Speaking to the film’s violence, Feld jokes: I’ll just say that you shouldn’t share Killer Kate! with your Grandparents! It all clicked for us, and we thought – what if a hotel took it upon themselves to violently end their competition? Could it get that bad?” They were so upset, in fact, that they wanted the city to ban ride-shares altogether they essentially wanted a monopoly. It can’t be “Just because”. How horrible would it be to get murdered by your hosts? We didn’t want to take the easy way out by filming just blood and gore, so Daniel and I sat down for weeks trying to flesh out the motivation for our killers. “We wanted to make something relevant to our time, and Airbnb stuck out to us. “This all started with Airbnb,” said Feld. The film’s genesis began with Airbnb, and taking it further than just having gore for the sake of gore. I’m influenced by the 80’s, and the music from that era has transcended the decade. Composer John Hopkins and I spent a lot of time focusing on the score, trying to make it nostalgic, yet original at the same time, which was quite the task.” Lastly, John Carpenter’s signature was always his music. We tried to do this with Killer Kate! by taking time to develop the characters and set the stage for what’s to come in the second half. They’re funny and different and often very authentic. I read afterwards that at the Locarno film festival, the 3000 spectators rose to their feet and applauded Tony Gatlif for a full ten minutes. ![]() For all its apparent flaws - less than perfect performances, continuity problems, some awkward editing, stylistic inconsistency - I came out feeling profoundly stirred. The audience was clearly drawn in, laughing at appropriate moments at the end, holding back tears and reluctant to leave the cinema. I had watched the film in a tiny cinema in the fifth arrondisment of Paris. In the days that followed, she watched the film again, this time conceding that the film did stereotype negatively.ĭimitrina's story surprised me. In short, the general opinion among the Roma was that far from being a vehicle for greater understanding of the Romani plight, it was perhaps better the film didn't exist at all.ĭimitrina was forced to rethink her initial reaction. If Tony Gatlif was of Romani descent, he had "betrayed" his people. Once again it was an outsider claiming authority over the already abused Romani image. Others felt the Romani behaviour shown, especially the vulgarity, was quite simply a false representation of how the Roma really are. Some said the lovemaking, and more particularly, the vulgar cursing between the Romani villagers, should never have been revealed to gadje, as this was humiliating. They said it was hurtful stereotyping, another false gadje version of Romani character. In a discussion that followed, she learned that they had unanimously disliked the film. Then she saw that some of the others, especially the five Roma, seemed not to share her views. During the pogrom, everyone is chased away, Ardjani is burnt to death, and the village is left in ashes.Īs the final credits rolled on, Dimitrina looked about the room and saw that, like herself, many of her colleagues were moved by the film. In a bar confrontation, he throws a glass and unintentionally kills one of the local Romanian authorities, which triggers a mob attack on the Romani village. Tragedy strikes when Ardjani returns after six months. With her help as interpreter, Stephane systematically records and documents local Romani musicians and singers. Soon he falls in love with Sabina, a dancer who performs with Izidor at local celebrations. The village Roma gradually accept Stephane, and he adapts himself into the community. Izidor welcomes this disoriented gadjo (non-Rom) as some form of godsend, and claiming to know the voice on the cassette, leads Stephan back to his village. Late one night, cold and with nowhere to sleep, he encounters Izidor, an elderly Romani musician, drunk and declaiming theatrically against the Romanian authorities who have imprisoned his son Ardjani. ![]() Stephane carries a recording of Nora Luca's voice, hoping that someone will recognize it. One day in June, around fifteen people gathered and sat through the film in silence. It was, of course, Gadjo Dilo, and he believed its broad distribution would be the single most effective thing that could be done to promote Roma rights in Europe.ĭimitrina obtained the video cassette and invited a group of Roma and non-Roma to view it in her Budapest office.
